I have written a couple of posts on my other blog regarding homeschooling (click here and here) which have generated an interesting range of responses, so I thought that I’d have a look at what the Bible has to say about homeschooling and state schooling. Brace yourself, I’m not going to mince words. Here we go…
1) Parents are instructed to teach their children at all times.
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut 6:6-9 NASB)
Parents clearly have a duty of teaching their children. Nothing in this passage precludes sending your children to school, however…
2) Parents are instructed to teach their children sound doctrine.
This is stated in the passage above and in Ephesians 6:4:
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (NASB)
Parents are pastors (shepherds) of their children so I believe that Titus 2:1 is applicable:
You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. (NIV)
Here is where almost every school, both state and private, fails the biblical test: they do not teach sound doctrine. Evolution and humanism are both false religions that are taught in schools, so sending your children to a school that teaches these false doctrines is equivalent to sending them to a madrassah to learn how to be a Muslim [see footnote 1]. Schools that do not teach evolution and humanism are almost as rare as rocking horse dung and…
3) Children will follow the path that is shown to them.
Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
[Prov 22:6 NASB]
Parents have two options: they can teach their children sound doctrine, or they can send their children to a school that teaches unsound doctrines such as evolution and humanism. As a general rule, people will follow for life what they are taught as children. That’s why the state wants to get its hands on children as early as possible and promotes “Early Childhood Education”. Note the “education” part: kindergartens aren’t babysitting services, they’re statist brainwashing centres.
However, even if the state wasn’t indoctrinating your children they would still suffer harm at school because…
4) Schools are full of fools.
Funnily enough, schools are full of children, and therefore schools are full of fools:
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child
[Prov 22:15a NASB]
What is foolishness? The Hebrew word comes from a root word meaning “to be perverse”, and denotes moral perversity rather than intellectual deficiency. It denotes someone who violates God’s laws and despises wisdom (good moral character)[2].
So, schools are full of morally perverse individuals, and it’s no surprise what happens when your children spend time with them:
He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will suffer harm.
[Prov 13:20 NASB]
That’s as plain as can be: parents who send their children to school are harming them by forcing them to spend time with fools. Moreover…
5) Parents who send their children to a school that does not teach sound doctrine are binding themselves to pagans.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 says:
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? [NASB]
John MacArthur says:
“not be bound together”. Lit. “unequally yoked”, an illustration taken from OT prohibitions to Israel regarding the work-related joining together of two different kinds of livestock [Deut 22:10]. By this analogy, Paul taught that it is not right to join together in common spiritual enterprise with those who are not of the same nature (unbelievers). It is impossible under such an arrangement for things to be done to God’s glory. [emphasis added]
Deuteronomy 22:10 says:
You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. [NASB]
About which MacArthur says:
…these two different animals couldn’t together plow a straight furrow. Their temperaments, natural instincts, and physical characteristics made it impossible.
Raising children is clearly a spiritual enterprise for parents. If they send their children to a school that does not teach sound doctrine they are binding themselves to pagans in a “common spiritual enterprise”. This will have 3 results:
- conflict between the ox and the donkey (parents and school).
- God will not be glorified.
- the product of the enterprise, the children, will not follow a straight and narrow path. It is much, much harder to gather a harvest of righteousness from a crooked furrow.
How much better to homeschool so that your children can walk with wise men instead of fools!

This post is not intended as condemnation, but I do hope to produce godly sorrow. Think about what is best for your children. Whilst it is theoretically possible to safely send children who have reached a certain level of maturity to a school that teaches sound doctrine and maintains good discipline, in reality such schools are rarer than honest politicians. It is never safe to send your children to a state school, and beware of the state curriculum: as can be seen is Footnote 1, the state curriculum is heavy on values, newspeak for doctrine.

Footnote 2) Expository Dictionary of Bible Words, Stephen D. Renn, pp 400-401. “Foolishness” in Prov 22:15 is Strong’s #200, which comes from #191, ‘ewil. Renn says that wisdom “refers to knowledge coupled with an inner quality that embodies a heart and life in conformity with the purposes and character of God” (p1050). In short, ‘foolishness’ means poor moral character and ‘wisdom’ means good moral character. Children are innately foolish and parents are instructed to instill wisdom into them (e.g. Prov 22:15: the evil anti-smacking law makes it much harder to turn foolish children into wise adults).

I don’t know much about humanism but I doubt there’s any public school classes about it.
Evolution is not a religion. I’ve been studying evolutionary biology for several years and I never once read anything about the existence or non-existence of gods when I studied the mechanisms of evolution or the evidence for evolution. Evolutionary biology is just a branch of science. There’s nothing religious about it.
For some people evolution might have religious implications, but that’s their problem. Biologists don’t care about religious implications. They are just doing science.
Some atheists might say the facts of evolution make God unnecessary, but they could say that about any scientific explanation of natural processes. Whatever anyone says about evolution, it’s still just one branch of science, and it’s not a religion.
I think one of the reasons you are in favor of homeschooling is because you don’t want your children exposed to the facts of modern biology. You don’t want them to learn about the science of evolution. Most scientifically literate people would accuse you of child abuse. Denying children the knowledge of modern science is cheating them. There’s no excuse for this child abuse. Everyone, even young children, have the right to know the scientific explanation for the diversity of life. They have the right to know how their species developed from other animals.
Your problem is your children will go to a university some day and they will find out you’ve been lying to them and they will find out you’ve been intentionally denying them a decent 21st century education. They don’t even have to go to a university to find out you’ve been lying to them. All they have to do is get on the internet and watch a YouTube video about evolution. How long do you think you can hide this information from them? They will eventually find out the truth and they will be ashamed of you.

Firstly, Do you have kids???
Secondly, where exactly in the Year 4-6 Body Image unit you provided the link for, does it develop into a humanist religion.
I grant the language is a little flaky but I can and would teach that entire unit from a biblical prespective ( i am curently at an intergrated school)and still follow the curriculum. What are the exact parts that are humanist??
Thirdly, I agree that schools are full of fools, I am a teacher so there is at least one at my school. However, how can you take Prov 22:15 and conclude that because every child is a fool we shouldn’t mix with them. Who did Jesus mix with when he was on earth. Or does this verse only apply to young children going to school?
Also where does Matthew 18:3 fit with this biblical view
And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
The bible tells us to become children (fools) and if we dont we cant enter heaven.
So on the one hand we are not to mix with fools yet on the other we are to become fools.
I realise the different verse are in different contexts and that is my point. A biblical world view becomes dangerous when we pick and choose our verses to please our own ideals.

Atheism and agnosticism is an active and ethical philosophy far greater than any negative responses to religion. An atheist lives life based on humanity and reason and recognises that moral values are properly founded on human nature and experience alone. They base decisions on the available evidence and an assessment of the outcomes, not on any dogma or sacred text. They foster individual rights and freedoms but believe that individual responsibility, social cooperation and mutual respect are just as important.
People can and will continue to find solutions to the world’s problems so that the quality of life can be improved for everyone. Be positive, gaining inspiration from life, art and culture, and a rich natural world. We have only one life and it is our responsibility to make it good, and to live it to the full.
There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell…. religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.
Religion is an endemic disorder of the mind propagated as a meme by socio-parasitic institutions. It can affect the stupid, the intelligent, the old and the young. It works mostly through the indoctrination of children.
Now let me say it like it is. To an enlightened atheist, with the knowledge of the harm it does, religion is like a disease, a sickness, a virus, an infection, a plague, a pestilence, an epidemic, a curse, a pandemic, a blight, a scourge, a contagion and a pox. Religion is filthy and unclean.
We need to understanding and compassionate towards those who are already infected but we would be immoral in our own eyes if we had the slightest respect for the concept, ideas or practices of religion.

No, you certainly didn’t mince your words CCL!
Bobxxxx, I am a scientist, and as a scientist I know the evidence for evolution is far more shaky than you seem to believe. Evolution is treated as a branch of science, but is actually a branch of philosophy.
This is because science deals with things that are testable and repeatable. You cannot study the past through science, because you cannot experiment with it. You can only study the present, and from that speculate about what you believe was most likely in the past. Both Evolutionary and Creation science do this, and are thus better understood as branches of philosophy, not science.
Scientific discoveries must be able to be disproven. But you can never prove or disprove anything about the past, however much evidence you have in one direction or the other people can still continue to believe both Evolution and Creation – because they are philosophy, not science.
There is much evidence that points towards Creation rather than Evolution. And much of the “evidence” for evolution you are taught in school has in fact been rejected by scientists or is questionable for various reasons. I won’t go into the science here, but I will say that it is perfectly reasonable as a scientist to doubt evolution, and many scientists do, including many atheists. But as I said, you can never prove it either way, because you cannot study the past through science.
The Bible teaches how God created the world. This is an independent account from the One who was there and knows all things. It is thus far more reliable than the speculation of any present-day scientist, and perfectly consistent with good science. Have a read of it sometime.

Mr Dennis: thank you. I have read a fair bit about the evidence for the biblical version of creation and I agree with everything that you say. “Testable and repeatable” is the key. Observation is also important: may cataclysmic natural events have been observed to support the bible’s account, but no gain of genetic information (the fiction which evolutionists try to say is fact) has ever been observed.
PS Mr Dennis is being a bit modest when he says that he’s a scientist. He’s studying to be a Post Hole Digger (PhD) in the field of soil science (no pun intended).
